Why the cogwheels?

Gillard Editing has a strong technical background, and we make use of specialised techniques behind the scenes such as macros, optical character recognition and other pattern-recognition systems. The image is intended to reflect this; we digitised it from the drawings of Difference Engine Number 2 by Charles Babbage—the father of modern computing. The Difference Engine is considered to be the forerunner of the modern computer. Alongside is a picture of a replica at the Science Museum. Click on the images to see the full-sized versions.
